Anyone scanning the shelf for eco-friendly cleaning products sees not one category but around six forms side by side: ready-to-use sprays, concentrates in small bottles, tablets for dropping into an empty bottle, powders, solid bars and refill pouches. They do roughly the same work but differ sharply in what actually gets transported, how much packaging is left per litre, and how precisely you can dose. That makes the choice more confusing than it needs to be, especially since nearly every form presents itself as the best option. Eco-friendly cleaning products come in around six forms that do the same work but differ sharply in packaging, transport and how precisely they can be dosed.
The differences sit mainly in what gets transported and in how much plastic is left per litre of ready-to-use product. That is a different criterion from the formula itself.

Ready-to-use: convenience against shipping water
A ready-to-use product is a bottle or spray with the agent already diluted. Nothing has to be measured or mixed before you start.
That convenience has a price. You buy and transport mainly water, and every bottle brings another cap or spray head that remains once it is empty.
For occasional use or a small household that is often an acceptable trade-off. With daily use the number of containers does mount up across a year.
An in-between form exists as well: a ready-to-use bottle you later top up with a concentrate. You keep the convenience of the spray head and only the repeated purchase of the bottle itself disappears.
Concentrate: less volume, one extra action
A concentrate holds the active substances without most of the water. You add that water at home from the tap.
Per litre of ready-to-use product this yields considerably less plastic and transport volume. It is the form with the largest gap compared with ready-to-use.
An action comes with it: measuring and mixing. You also need to keep an empty bottle, which only works if there is a fixed place for it in the cupboard.
Watch the dilution ratio in the instructions when mixing. Dosing more generously than stated undoes the advantage of the form immediately.
Write the ratio on the bottle itself if needed. Once the concentrate bottle is empty or out of sight, the information about how much to add each time disappears with it.
Tablets and powders: transport at its smallest
Tablets and powders contain almost no water, which makes transport the smallest of all the forms. What you carry home is essentially the working part only.
They only work well if they dissolve at the temperature you use. In cold water residue sometimes remains, which shows on a surface as soon as it dries.
Dosing is simple because a tablet is a fixed quantity. That is also a limitation when a task asks for less than a whole tablet delivers.
Powder offers that flexibility, provided you measure. Without a measuring spoon the dose drifts upward quickly, with the same effect as a generously poured bottle.
Store powder dry and closed. Moisture makes it clump, so a scoop no longer matches the amount you think you are measuring and the dose shifts unnoticed.
Solid bars and blocks
With solid forms the packaging is often cardboard or absent entirely, which brings the number of plastic parts down to zero.
They suit manual work where you draw a damp cloth or brush across the block and start straight away.
They are less practical where an even dilution is needed, because you cannot easily control how much product ends up on the cloth.
The surface plays a part too. On porous and untreated materials an uncontrolled amount is harder to spread evenly, so patches appear more readily and stay visible after drying.
Keep the bar dry between uses. A block left sitting in a pool of water wears down noticeably faster than one allowed to drain.
Refill systems and bulk containers
A refill system is a larger container or pouch from which you top up an existing bottle. This sharply reduces the number of caps and spray heads.
It only works while the refill stays available and the shop is reachable. If either fails, a new bottle gets bought anyway and the gain disappears.
Watch the condition of the bottle you top up as well. A pump that starts sticking after a year makes an otherwise sound system unusable.
Rinse the bottle briefly between two refills. Remnants of an old filling otherwise mix with the new one, which is most noticeable when switching products within the same bottle.
Preparing your own: the form outside the shelf
The sixth form is not on the shelf: cleaning water you prepare yourself. With cleaning using ozone water, a device guides air past an element that converts part of the oxygen into ozone.
That gas dissolves into tap water and reacts with organic soiling on the surface, which supports the loosening stage. Background sits under ozone water and under the ozone water machine.

How to compare the forms without arithmetic
Three questions suffice. How much water is in what I carry home, how many plastic parts am I left with per litre, and can I dose precisely.
A concentrate scores on the first two questions, a tablet mainly on the first, a ready-to-use bottle on neither but well on convenience.
Which form fits therefore depends as much on the routine as on the form itself. A form that does not fit your week gets swapped back within a month.
A fourth question helps when in doubt: how many actions does it cost each time. Every extra step lowers the chance a form survives a busy week, however favourable it looks on paper.
Which form suits which household
For a small household with low consumption, ready-to-use or refills often work best, because the number of actions stays limited.
For a larger household covering a lot of surface daily, a concentrate or preparing your own delivers clearly more, since repetition is greater and small differences accumulate.
Anyone cleaning in several locations benefits from a form that travels easily. Weight and spill resistance then count for more than packaging gains.
Lifting stays manual work with every form. With one damp and one dry cloth according to the two-cloth method, the loosened soil actually leaves the surface.
Limits of comparing forms
No single form covers every task. Baked-on grease, limescale and stains in textiles call for a product with specific action, whatever the packaging.
The choice between forms is therefore about daily volume and not about the exceptional case. There a targeted product remains the logical step.
Form also says nothing about composition. A concentrate can contain the same substances as a ready-to-use bottle; the difference lies in what gets transported.
Assess the two separately, then. First the form on packaging and transport, then the composition on the ingredient list; otherwise a favourable form pushes a long list of substances out of view.
Costs and affordability
Concentrates, tablets and refills usually cost less per litre of ready-to-use product, because you add the water yourself instead of paying to have it shipped.
Preparing your own shifts costs towards a one-off purchase plus water and electricity. Whether that works out depends on current consumption and on the service life of the device.
Calculate across a year with every form rather than per purchase. Month by month the amounts look small and comparable; across twelve months they diverge.
Look at the price per litre of ready-to-use product rather than the price per pack. A small bottle of concentrate seems expensive until you work out how many litres it makes.
