Point one: what is inside the bottle

Composition concerns the substances in the product and what happens to them once rinsed away. Each substance follows its own route through the waste water.

 

Broadly a product consists of active substances that help loosen grease and soil, and of auxiliary substances that keep the formula stable, colour it, scent it or thicken it.

 

That second group contributes little to the cleaning itself, yet still runs through manufacturing and drainage. A short ingredient list is therefore often easier to assess than a long one.

 

You do not need to recognise the individual names to see that. The number of lines and the presence of perfume and colourant already say enough for a first impression.

 

Watch the word biodegradable as well. It indicates the extent to which a substance is broken down under specific conditions, but says nothing about speed and nothing about where that happens.

 

Point two: packaging and choice of material

Packaging is the point you can count yourself. A refill, a concentrate or a larger unit delivers less plastic per litre of ready-to-use product than separate bottles.

 

Material counts here too. A bottle made from a single plastic type is easier to process than a spray head with springs, tubes and several materials mixed together.

 

Review a year rather than a purchase. Only then does it become visible how much packaging a routine really asks for, because the bottles disappear spread across the months.

 

A simple test takes a month. Set empty containers aside instead of discarding them straight away and count them at the end. Almost everyone estimates that number too low beforehand.

 

Point three: how much water is shipped along

Transport rarely appears on a label. A ready-to-use product consists mostly of water, and that water travels from factory to warehouse to shop to cupboard.

Dosing is the point where the user has the most influence. Here habit decides more than formulation what actually gets consumed.

 

A product that looks favourable on paper but is dispensed three times as generously ends up worse in practice than an ordinary product used by measure.

 

Above a certain amount the effect barely increases, while the chance of a leftover film grows. That film attracts dust and adds to the work.

 

A cap or measuring cup with a known volume takes the guesswork out of the action. In many households consumption drops noticeably without any change in the result.

 

Dose onto the cloth rather than directly onto the surface as well. That spreads the amount evenly and prevents spots where the product stays concentrated and shows up later.

 

What certification marks add and what they do not

Certification marks help when comparing two similar products, because published criteria and an auditing party stand behind them.

 

They assess the product itself, however, and not the way someone applies it at home. The dosing step therefore stays entirely out of view, while in practice that step weighs heaviest of all.

 

Note who issues the symbol too. A brand logo designed by the manufacturer says something different from a symbol issued by a body that publishes its criteria and audits compliance.

 

Use a mark as a starting point in a comparison, then, and not as a final verdict. Two products carrying the same symbol can still differ considerably in packaging and dilution ratio.

Light, fresh soil on smooth, closed surfaces responds mainly to moisture, contact time and the movement of a cloth. A product is no necessity there but a habit.

 

With baked-on grease, limescale and stains in textiles the picture differs. There the product does the real work and postponing or waiting longer achieves nothing.

Calculate across a year rather than a purchase. Month by month the amounts look small and comparable; across twelve months the differences become visible.

 

Include cloths in the sum as well. They wear out, need washing and partly decide how often a task has to be repeated, which counts for more than the price gap between two bottles.
