How an ozone water device works in practice

This guide shows step by step how an ozone water machine turns tap water into ozone water, what happens inside the device and what that means for daily use.

How does an ozone water device work?

An ozone water device converts tap water into ozone water inside a closed system. The unit contains a controller, an ozone module and a mixing chamber that bring ozone into the water in a controlled way. The result is fresh ozone water that you use immediately for surface cleaning.

Step 1: tap water enters the machine

Tap water flows into the ozone water machine via a fixed connection or a small reservoir. The controller checks the inlet and makes sure there is enough water for a batch. This is where every cleaning round starts.

Step 2: ozone is mixed into the water

In the ozone module a defined amount of ozone is produced and led into the mixing chamber, where it is mixed with the water. Sensors monitor when the target level has been reached and then stop the process. This makes the result repeatable and predictable.

Step 3: use fresh ozone water straight away

Fresh ozone water now flows from the outlet. You use it immediately as cleaning water for closed, water-resistant surfaces such as tables, counters, tiles, lockers, wheelchairs or bed rails. Because the activity decreases again with a half-life of around 15–30 minutes, there is no point in storing ozone water in bottles. It is strongest when it comes directly from the device.

In daily routines you typically fill a bucket or spray bottle and then work with the instructions from the two-cloth method: cloth A to clean, cloth B to dry.

Safety and limits of the technology

The device is built for surface cleaning only, not for drinking water or medical use. You use it on tables, furniture and other closed surfaces, not as water to drink. The guide Is ozone water safe explains what safe use means in practice.

Maintenance and cost picture

After roughly 1000 hours or 500,000 litres a service or maintenance visit is advised, usually about €75 in parts. In the article How much does ozone water cost you can see how this fits into the cost per litre.

What does an ozone water device do?

An ozone water device turns tap water into ozone water in a closed system so you have cleaning water for closed surfaces on demand.

Why can you not store ozone water in bottles?

The activity of ozone water drops over time, with a half-life of around 15–30 minutes, so it is meant to be used fresh rather than stored.

How often does an ozone water machine need maintenance?

Most devices produce a low humming sound that is comparable to other small electric cleaning units.

Can one ozone water machine serve several areas?

Yes, by filling buckets or spray bottles centrally one device can supply cleaning water for several teams or areas.
